What are the key differences between Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD?
|
What is Blu-ray Disc?
Blu-ray Disc is a next-generation, optical disc format that enables the ultimate high-def entertainment experience. Blu-ray Disc provides these key features and advantages:
|
What is Blu-ray?
The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of this shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the common DVD format, which uses a red, 650 nm laser. Blu-ray Disc can store 25 GB on each layer, as opposed to a DVD's 4.7 GB. Several manufacturers have released single layer and dual layer (50 GB) recordable BDs and rewritable discs. All supporting studios have either already released or have announced release of movies on 50GB discs.
Blu-ray Disc is similar to PDD, another optical disc format developed by Sony (which has been available since 2004) but offering higher data transfer speeds. PDD was not intended for home video use and was aimed at business data archiving and backup. Blu-ray Disc is currently in a format war with rival format HD DVD.

What is HDMI?
What is the difference between Blu-ray Disc and DVD?
Due to the fact that the data layer on a Blu-ray Disc is placed much "closer" to the laser lens than in DVD, there is less distortion resulting in significantly improved tolerances. Hence, more precision and ultra-high storage densities are now possible.
Informatin reference from blu-raydisc website
Why is the format called Blu-ray Disc?
The name Blu-ray came from the fact that the laser beam which reads the data from the new discs is blue instead of red which is used for current DVDs and CDs. This new blue laser is at the heart of Blu-ray Disc technology (i.e. blue ray of light). Informatin reference from blu-raydisc website |
Will all Blu-ray Disc products support and HDMI connection?
Although not a format requirement, it is anticipated that most Blu-ray Disc products will support HDMI because it is the best digital connection available.
Will Blu-ray Disc products play my existing DVDs and CDs?
The Blu-ray Disc system uses the same 12 cm and 8 cm disc sizes to support backward compatibility with your CDs and DVDs and other optical disc formats. Therefore, it is anticipated that most Blu-ray Disc hardware products will play your existing DVDs and CDs. Informatin reference from blu-raydisc website |
Will my DVDs look beeter on HDTV?
Yes, your DVDs can be played on an HD display in 480p. However, Blu-ray Discs will output full high definition resolution in 1080p which will maximize the use of your high definition TV.
DVD RW
I am using an external DVD RW drives playing a DVD movie. Why there is always a delay in playback?
Please check your USB port's specifications. If your system only support USB 1.0 / 1.1 specification, then the transfer rate supported is only 60% of that needed for DVD playback, therefore you will see delay in the pictures. We suggest you upgrade your system to USB 2.0 specification before play DVD movie with your external DVD RW drive. |
Is there any Regional Code Restrictions for DVD Burners?
Each DVD ReWritable drive have five (5) opportunities for resetting the regional code. After these changes have been utilized, the DVD ReWritable drive will need to be send back to its manufacturer for re-configuration. |
My burning device was working fine when using NERO, but after upgrade from Windows XP SP1 to SP2, it starts failing to burn successfully.
NERO has occurred some compatibility problems when upgrade from Windows XP SP1 to SP2. Please visit NERO’s official website for free download of the newer version patch files. For further information, please refer to http://www.nero.com/en/632011181528025.html |
Under " My Computer ", DVD disc capacity is reading as 1.99 GB using Windows ME or Windows 98, but if you " Select All " to calculate the total capacity within the DVD disc itself, then everything is fine.
It is due to the Windows ME and Windows 98 limitations, whereas Windows 2000 or Windows XP do not have such problem. |
What are the differences between " For General " and " For Authoring " for DVD-R discs?
What are the differences between DVD-R / RW, DVD+R / RW and DVD-RAM?
There are 3 main streams :
|
|
What are the disc capacity for DVD video discs?
DVD-5 : a single-sided and single-layer disc which holds 4.7 GB of data.
DVD-9 : a single-sided and double-layers disc with capacity of 8.5 GB.

What is a DVD Multi Burner?
DVD Multi Burner is manufactured based upon the DVD-RAM and DVD-R / RW specifications. It amends the " For PC purposes " design to " For both computer and consumer devices ". |
What is the difference between " For Data " and " For Video " for DVD+R / RW discs?
Why does my external DVDRW drive always fail during burning?
Why does only the first session of a Multi-Session DVD+/-R disc display under Windows ME or Windows 98?
It is due to the Windows ME and Windows 98 limitations, whereas Windows 2000 or Windows XP do not have such problem.
Why does the " File Manager " still display files after " Quick Erase " or " Full Erase " of a DVD+RW disc under Win ME or Win 98?
All you need to do is to eject the DVD+RW disc, then insert back again. Windows 2000 or Windows XP do not display this information. |
Why my DVD burner can't burn blank DVD+RW disks?
Some burning software do not offer the function of formatting DVD+RW disk in advance when burning is in process, which causes the burning process failure. When such situation occurred, please format the disk before processing burning action. In the other hand, DVD-RW disks do not have such issue. |
Why my recording software only show " Image Recorder " after successful installation?
Why my regular DVD Players can NOT read my recorded movies when I am using DVD+R / RW media?

Can I upgrade the firmware of my DVD drive?
Only models that support flash memory can be upgraded. |
Do I have to upgrade the firmware of my DVD-ROM drive?
A firmware upgrade is not necessary if the DVD-ROM drive is functioning properly in your system. |
How come the firmware version has NOT changed after I run the upgrade program?
Please follow below process : 1.Check if you've already have the latest firmware version. 2.Check if you've already have the latest firmware version. 3.Check your model number and the files you've downloaded. The firmware for each model is NOT workable for other models. 4.Maybe the DVD-ROM drive's hardware profile does NOT match the criteria programmed in the upgrade utility. The upgrade utility has in programmed with a criteria-check function to avoid flashing the DVD-ROM drive with a wrong firmware (consult you Lite-On Customer Service representatives for further assistance). |
How do I determine the firmware version of my DVD drive?
Go to "My Computer", open "Control Panel", double click on "System", choose "Devices Manager", select "CD/DVD-ROM", highlight the DVD-ROM listed, then press "Property", go over to "Setting" tab, there you should be able to find the firmware version.
How is the compatibility of a DVD-ROM drive?
A DVD drive can read CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-R discs, and its hardware is capable of supporting DVD-RW and DVD+RW with minor firmware changes. However, DVD-RAM discs will require special PUH and IC to be supported. The recent published DVD-Multi specification will standardize the compatibility of DVD-ROM drive. |
How many types of DVD disc are there?
There is DVD-5, a single-sided and single-layer disc which holds 4.7GB of data; DVD-9, a single-sided and double-layers disc with capacity of 8.5GB; DVD-10, a double-sided and single-layer disc with capacity of 9.4GB; and DVD-18, a double-sided and double-layers disc holds 17GB. The re-writable DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM all had capacity below 3GB when first introduced. However, the latest capacity specification on these discs has approached 4.7GB of a DVD-ROM. |
How to upgrade firmware?
Visit the DVD-ROM drive's manufacturer's official website to see if there is any new firmware available for your model. And be sure to match the model number, as the firmware for different models are NOT interchangeable. When confirmed, please download the firmware file to a location you can find later. Go to the location where you just stored the file for upgrade. Execute the file and wait for the program to confirm the operations. Always remember to reboot your system after completion. After the system re-boots, double check the firmware version in the "Device Manager". |
What are Mini-DVD, DVDonCD, cdDVD?
These are various names used when using DVD's MPEG2 and Dolby AC-3 encoding method to record on a CD disc (650 MB). The result is that each disc holds only 18 minutes of high quality movie. Plus, due to the requirements of DVD quality playback, it must be played by CD-ROM drive rated at 9X (equals to 1X DVD) or higher. Most DVD players do NOT support these formats. |
What are the differences between DVDs and CDs?
What do I do if the firmware upgrade failed?
If your DVD-ROM drive is still functioning with the original firmware, then it means that firmware upgrading is not necessary at this time. If your DVD-ROM drive became non-functional after firmware upgrade, please contact Lite-On Customer Service for corrective action. |
What is RPC, RPC-2, RCE, CSS and Macro-Vision?
Because DVD was developed and designed to store and playback DVD movies, and due to the business advantages concerns, the 8 major Film Industry Company wishing to prevent DVDs sold in one region, which may be transported to where it is not released. Based on these concerns, the 8 major Film Industry Company had set some protections: CSS (Content Scramble System) is added to prevent digital duplication of DVD discs; Macro-Vision is added to prevent copying through analog devices such as VCR. The 8 major Film Industry Company also divided the world into 7 regions (see attached table), and requested all DVD discs and DVD playback devices to embed regional code. Only when the DVD disc's regional code matches with the DVD playback device, the movie then can be played, and this is called Regional Playback Control (RPC). However, these 3 methods of protection have all been hacked. There are a lot of makers whom produce all-region discs and players. So, the 8 major Film Industry Company introduced RCE (Regional Control Enhancement) that render all the all-region playback devices become useless. RPC-2 is set for DVD-ROM use only. It allows PC users to change the regional code setting on the DVD-ROM drive for 5 times in order to play movies from different regions. After the 5th time, the DVD-ROM drive must be returned to its manufacturer to reset the RPC-2 counter in order to make future changes. However, the manufacturer is only allowed to perform such reset for 4 times. So, after a total of 25 changes of regional code, users can no longer change the settings on the DVD-ROM drive.

What is the DVD-ROM drive's DAE and VCD copy speed?
What is the purpose of a DVD?
The DVD was developed for storing movies that have better quality and larger capacity than VCD discs. By using MPEG-2 and Dolby AC-3 encoding method, a DVD can deliver 500-line horizontal resolution of high-quality picture and 5.1 channels Hi-Fi sound, which makes it an ideal media for home theater uses.
What is the transfer rate of the DVD?
Why DVDs need dual wavelength laser Pick-Up-Head (PUH)?
Due to the small pit and track pitches, DVD media only can be read by laser beam with 680nm wavelength. However, due to the reflexibility issue of the CD-R dye materials, laser beam at such wavelength can NOT read CD-R media. Therefore, to satisfy the compatibility of DVD-ROM drives, dual-frequency PUH are used to read most CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW media available. In the previous years, there had a development of dual lens PUH for solving this problem, but such design has not been NOT successful due to the higher costs associated with the technology. |
Why is my DVD-ROM drive NOT performing as advertised?
The highest transfer rate of a DVD-ROM can be achieved is in DOS mode. The transfer rate slows down, depending upon the available system resources in a Windows environment. During playback operations, always enable DMA mode, and use data DVD instead of movie DVD. |
